Typhoon Mangkhut is forecast to weaken into a tropical depression over September 17, but will still cause heavy downpours in many areas in northern and southern Vietnam, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

Northern and north-central localities have taken measures to prepare themselves for super typhoon Mangkhut, which is forecast to bring heavy rains and whirlwind to the regions on September 17-18.

Localities need to be fully prepared for evacuations of residents from dangerous areas and to enact plans to ensure the safety of reservoirs as super typhoon Mangkhut bears down on the East Sea.

A strong typhoon tore through the northern tip of the Philippines on Saturday packing winds of more than 200 kph (124 mph) along with torrential rain, killing at least 7 people, wrecking homes and triggering at least 42 landslides.
