The Authority of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) revealed on June 2 that a second mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) will soon debut in Vietnam.

Vietnamese mobile subscribers have a better experience in network quality and speed than users in many Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines, according to a report by Tutela, a global crowdsourced mobile data company.

Mobifone, Vinaphone and Viettel have begun testing the mobile number portability (MNP) service, which enables mobile subscribers to retain their numbers when changing from one carrier to another.

Mobile network operators have noted changes in subscribers’ taste and technology trends. They now tend to access the internet and social networks instead of using phones to make calls or send messages.

Tens of Vietnamese smartphone brands have been made, but only two of them sell well.

Developing data products is the only choice for small networks amid pressure from the giant telecoms VinaPhone, MobiFone and Viettel.
