At the meeting, the top legislator made a brief on Vietnam’s socio-economic development over the past time, saying the country has reaped achievements across spheres, from economy to social, domestic and external affairs, especially in economic growth, international integration, and social welfare.

Ngan said her visit aims to further enhance cooperation between Vietnam and the EU as well as the EP, and deepen the traditional friendship and collaboration between Vietnam and Belgium and the Belgian parliament.

Talking about her meetings with leaders of the European Commission (EC), the EP and Belgium, she said the hosts committed to supporting the promotion of relations between Vietnam and the EU and Belgium, particularly the prioritization of the signing and ratification of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) right at the beginning of the EP’s new tenure, she said.

Lauding efforts of the embassy and the mission, the chief legislator said the Party, State and National Assembly always create conditions for Vietnamese representative offices abroad to operate, contributing to national construction, defence and development.

The NA amended and supplemented some articles of the law on Vietnamese representative offices abroad in 2017, Ngan said, asking the agencies to contribute opinions on the implementation of the document.

She told the overseas Vietnamese that the NA has launched its portal and is building an e-parliament in an effort to make it easier for people to contribute to the legislature’s operation.

The top legislator applauded the Vietnamese community for maintaining traditional culture, especially organising Vietnamese language teaching classes for the next generation, saying there should be a mechanism to support the work.

Ngan noted her hope that the community will continue to work as a bridge contributing to enhancing and consolidating the all-round cooperation and friendship between Vietnam and Belgium.

According to Ambassador Quang, about 13,000 Vietnamese, including 250 students, are living and working in Belgium.
