A good diplomat must first have firm political mettle and always take national interests as the compass for action. Every foreign affairs official must remember that behind them stand the Party, the country and the people, stressed Party General Secretary and State President To Lam.

Vietnam must consistently pursue its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, self-strengthening, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, and diversification and multilateralisation of external relations, while promoting deep, comprehensive and effective international integration to safeguard the national interests to the fullest extent.

Since its inception in 1957, the Diplomatic Conference has served as the foreign affairs sector’s most important forum for reviewing international developments, assessing diplomatic performance, disseminating the Party’s foreign policy and guidelines, and defining priorities for the coming period.

Heads of representative missions overseas should always bear in mind that they represent a nation undergoing profound transformation and that every achievement made abroad can be translated into opportunities for people at home, top leader To Lam said.

Held regularly since 1957, the Diplomatic Conference serves as the sector's most important forum, bringing together officials from domestic units and overseas missions to review international developments, assess diplomatic affairs and agree on orientations for the next phase.
