President reaffirms consistent Vietnamese solidarity and support for Cuba

President Nguyen Xuan Phuc reaffirmed the nation’s unwavering solidarity and continued support of the Cuban people during a meeting held with General Raul Castro Ruz on September 20 (local time) as part of his official friendship visit to Cuba.

The President conveyed greetings sent by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and other Party and State leaders, along with the people of Vietnam to the Cuban General. He also thanked the Caribbean nation for its timely assistance to the country during the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Phuc and Gen. Ruz recalled the latter’s first visit to Vietnam 55 years ago in his capacity as Second Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) Central Committee, which opened up a fresh period of solidarity and mutual support between the two countries.

Furthermore, President Phuc informed Gen. Ruz about the outcomes of his talks and meetings held with leaders of the Cuban Party, State and National Assembly during the trip. These are expected to deepen the special traditional friendship and all-around co-operation that exists between both sides in a more effective manner.

Leaders of both Vietnamese and Cuban ministries and agencies also held meetings aimed at discussing a range of specific co-operation measures.

Cuba has sent doctors, presented treatment drugs, and shared its domestically-produced Abdala vaccine with the country in the fight against the pandemic, he added.

Both nations were able to reach an agreement on the supply and transfer of production technology of the vaccine, with both sides working on a co-operation plan regarding COVID-19 vaccines for children, PM Phuc told his host.

The Cuban General added that he always keeps a close watch on Vietnamese development, expressing his delight at achievements the nation has recorded in the recent past.

President Phuc responded by stating his desire to welcome the General on a visit to the country once more when the conditions permit.The same day, PM Phuc departed Havana for Santiago, the second largest city of Cuba. Once in Santiago he laid wreaths at Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s grave and the monument commemorating national hero Jose Marti.
