The 14th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime officially opened

PSNews - The 14th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC 14), themed "Cohesive and responsive ASEAN in preventing and fighting transnational crimes" officially opened in a virtual format on November 26, in Hanoi. 

Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended and delivered a keynote speech. Immediately after the opening ceremony, General To Lam, Minister of Public Security will chair the plenary session of the AMMTC 14.

The event saw the participation of ministers or equivalents in charge of transnational crime prevention of the ASEAN member countries, the Secretary General of ASEAN, and Chairman of the ASEAN Directors-General of Immigration Departments and Heads of Consular Affairs Divisions of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs (DGICM).

Present at the hub in Hanoi will also be representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat and 9 embassies of ASEAN member countries in Hanoi as well as representatives of relevant Vietnamese ministries, branches and units of the Ministry of Public Security.

At the plenary session, Vietnam will take over the AMMTC Chairmanship from Thailand - the host country of the AMMTC 13 in November 2019.

During the AMMTC 14, participating ministers and equivalents in charge of transnational crime prevention of the ASEAN countries will look into situations in the region and world that could impact on developments in the regional transnational crime situation. 

They will discuss and seek approaches to promote the implementation of the objective set out in the ASEAN Action Plan on prevention and fight against transnational crime for the period 2016-2025. At the same time, delegates are expected to approve documents of the meeting, adopt initiatives and ideas from member countries in the AMMTC mechanism.

The AMMTC 14 is the most important international security cooperation meeting hosted by the Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security in Vietnam’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2020.

AMMTC, which is considered as the central and comprehensive regional security cooperation mechanism in prevention and fight against transnational crime in the region, serves as ASEAN’s political-security pillar of the ASEAN Community.

Success of the AMMTC 14 will contribute to the overall success of Vietnam’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2020 and strengthen the country's important position in the international arena. It will also demonstrate Vietnam's strong political commitment and proactiveness in international cooperation on transnational crime prevention and control.

Earlier, on November 25, Lieutenant General Nguyen Thanh Son, Director of the Foreign Relations Department under the Ministry of Public Security, who is also the head of the Vietnam's delegation to the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) chaired a preparatory session of the SOMTC.
