Appreciating Vietnam’s active and pioneering engagement in security, political affairs, sustainable development and a just energy transition, Secretary-General Guterres expressed his hope that Vietnam will continue to play a strong role in the world’s transformation, contribute to efforts to address climate change under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), and promote emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).

The meetings and exchanges helped strengthen political trust, bilateral cooperation and coordination at multilateral forums, while creating further momentum for Vietnam’s relations with partners and helping seize opportunities for national development.

Vietnam always values the UN’s support throughout its development and international integration, and looks forward to deepening cooperation across all pillars of the UN’s work, including peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.

Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres has congratulated Vietnam on its election to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, noting his belief that Vietnam will maintain active and effective contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and handed over a letter from Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Incoming UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will take the oath of office today, 12 December, after being appointed by the United Nations General Assembly on 13 October. He will serve for a five-year period, ending 31 December 2021.
