#UNCLOS 1982

PSNews - As a coastal country and a member of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, Vietnam believes that all activities of international cooperation, including maritime cooperation, need to be in line with international law, especially the UNCLOS, stated Foreign Ministry's Deputy Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang.

As many as 150 officials and experts from Vietnam and representative agencies of ASEAN countries attended an international workshop in Hanoi on December 8 marking 40 years of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).

A seminar running theme "Việt Nam – Đất nước nhìn từ biển” (Vietnam - the country seen from the sea) was held recently to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the signing of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and ten years of the enforcement of the Law of the Sea of Vietnam.

Within the workshop marking the 10th anniversary of ASEAN Maritime Forum (AMF) held on December 14, delegates highlighted the need to increase information sharing and coordination among agencies, and abide by international law, especially the UNCLOS 1982.

Pham Hai Anh, Vietnam’s representative to the United Nations, on December 10 affirmed Vietnam’s consistent stance that all disputes  should be settled via peaceful measures, in line with international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Vietnam actively participated in the negotiation process and building of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and has made significant efforts in enforcing the pact.

PSNews - Vietnam once again affirms its consistent position on the East Sea (South China Sea), emphasizing the importance of resolving disputes by peaceful means on the basis of respect for international law, including UNCLOS 1982, and diplomatic and legal processes.

The Embassies of the UK and Japan together with the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) co-hosted a workshop on Tuesday 29 November entitled “Navigating Towards the Free and Open Seas of Asia: The Rule of Law and International Cooperation”.
