Many coastal provinces in Vietnam have great potentials to develop offshore wind power, according to a report on maritime environment and national islands in the 2016-20 period by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The Enterprize Energy (EE) on May 27 signed a contract with PetroVietnam Technical (PTSC) G&S and Fugro to supply, install and operate a Floating LiDAR (FLiDAR) at the planned site of a wind power project offshore the south central province of Binh Thuan.

The project “Support to the Up-Scaling of Wind Power in Vietnam funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) was reviewed in a seminar in Hanoi on May 8.

Vietnam is not expected to meet its target of generating 800 MW of wind power by 2020 as a proposal to increase the regulated selling price of wind power has been postponed.

Vietnam has great potential for developing wind power but big initial investment, technical complexity and a lack of quality technicians are deterring the development of the sector.

The country plans to have 800 megawatts of wind power by 2020, but pricing remains an issue.

Vietnam may need to invest about VND859 trillion ($38 billion) in electricity generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure between now and 2020 to meet domestic demand, the government said in a new report.
