Vietnam attaches importance to relations with Indonesia

Vietnam attaches great importance to and wants to constantly strengthen and expand cooperation with other countries in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, says Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Chinh, who arrived in Jakarta on April 23 for an ASEAN summit, made the statement during his talks with Indonesia President Joko Widodo.

He briefed his host on the results of the recent national congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam which outlined the country’s major development orientations for 2021-2025 with a vision for 2030-2045.

The PM affirmed that Vietnam continues to pursue the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, openness, diversification and multilateralization of external relations and active international integration,

Chinh highly appreciated Indonesia’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19 and expressed his belief that Indonesia will overcome difficulties, control the epidemic and spur socio-economic development in order to realize the “Vision of Indonesia 2045”.

For his part, President Widodo spoke highly of Vietnam’s recent successes in the COVID-19 control and economic recovery, and affirmed that Indonesia desires to develop the traditional friendship and strategic partnership with Vietnam to new heights.

Both leaders exchange views on measures to boost the Vietnam-Indonesia cooperation.

Both host and guest noted that the Vietnam-Indonesia cooperative ties have developed strongly in all areas, especially in economics, trade and investment in recent times.

They agreed to increase reciprocal visit exchanges at all levels and through various channels in flexible forms, while effectively implementing bilateral cooperation mechanisms and agreements, especially the 2019-2023 Action Program for the Vietnam – Indonesia Strategic Partnership and the Vision for bilateral defense cooperation for 2018-2022.

The two sides pledged to facilitate business operation, promote trade, and soon resume flight routes between the two countries at an appropriate time so as to raise bilateral trade to US$10 billion in the coming time.

They agree that parties concerned should fully implement East Sea-related agreements in line with international law.

They consented that Vietnam and Indonesia will continue to cooperate closely and effectively at regional and international forums, especially in ASEAN, APEC and the United Nations. Both countries will work together with other ASEAN countries to constantly strengthen solidarity and promote ASEAN’s central role in addressing regional strategic issues, including the East Sea issue.

It’s important for the countries to closely coordinate in the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, internationally known as the South China Sea, and negotiations to soon achieve an effective, efficient Code of Conduct in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), they said.

The two leaders underscored the special importance of this ASEAN Leaders’ Summit in Jakarta, to chart a development course for the grouping in a rapid changing world.

The summit is scheduled to take place on April 24.
