Vietnam commits to fostering connection between landlocked countries and transit ones

PSNews - Vietnam affirmed its commitment to fostering co-operation between landlocked developing countries (or LLDCs) and transit countries, aiming to enhance regional connectivity, and deepen their participation in global value-added chains.

The statement was made by Deputy Prime Minister (PM) and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh at the High-level Euro-Asia Regional Meeting on Improving Cooperation on Transit, Trade Facilitation and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on March 7 in Hanoi.

The meeting, running till March 9, is held by the Vietnamese Government in partnership with the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) on the occasion of Vietnam celebrating its 40 years membership in the United Nations.

Vietnam, for the first time, has hosted a UN high-level meeting. This would help enhance Vietnam's role in the UN as well as provide opportunities for Vietnamese businesses to promote cooperation with partners from other nations.

At the meeting’s opening ceremony, Deputy PM Pham Binh Minh welcomed delegates from UN agencies and international and regional organizations, saying Vietnam is fully committed to the 2030 Agenda and is a strong champion of partnerships.

According to Deputy PM Minh, Vietnam has taken concrete steps to strengthen economic linkages and infrastructural connection with its neighbors, especially Laos.

In fact, Laos and Vietnam have put in place the Single-Stop Inspection model at Lao Bao – Dansavanh border gates on the East-West Economic Corridor, and will apply this model at all border gates and check points between the two countries.

“The two countries are also cooperating to enable Laos’s access to Vung Ang Sea Port on the Central coastal area of Vietnam as a gateway to ASEAN and the international market,” Deputy PM Minh said, “Laos and Vietnam have also agreed to build the Vientiane-Hanoi highway to further facilitate the regional trade flow.

“Vietnam has done its best to contribute to the work of the UN over the last four decades, and we will keep doing,” the Vietnamese Deputy PM emphasized, and called all countries to take transitional steps to develop a sustainable and resilient world by turning “land-locked countries” into “land-linked countries”.

Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya, UN Deputy Secretary-General, Senior Representative of the UN-OHRLLS, in his remark, called on countries to strengthen cooperation between LLDCs and transit countries in expanding their infrastructure connectivity and technical and administrative arrangements in their transport, customs and logistic systems.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General then stressed that the meeting offers a platform where the LLDCs, their neighbours and other development partners can foster their partnerships to enhance the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
