Regarding the Azerbaijani diplomat’s remarks about the country’s COVID-19 fight and assistance offered to the international community, Imanov said, “I hail Vietnam’s desperate fight against COVID-19. To my personal opinion rapid and active response by the authorities and public co-operation play an important role in this combat against COVID-19 pandemic. Thus Vietnam has followed a budget-friendly approach that has proven equally effective.

The Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam closed its borders on time, applied social distancing restrictions, allocated financial assistance to the population and business entities, timely informed the population about the consequences of this disaster and the preventive measures that need to be taken against its spread, as well as put hospitals and local health departments on high alert before the first fatality in China and only three days after confirmation of the outbreak there.”

“At the same time I would like to emphasise that with its active participation in the fight against the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, Vietnam has once again demonstrated its important role in the international arena. From this point of view, I appreciate Vietnam's assistance to international partners in this struggle,” he said.

“I would like to draw your attention that recently medical masks have been submitted by the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Also medical masks purchased at the personal expense of Vietnamese graduates of Azerbaijani educational institutions have been send to Azerbaijan by the Vietnam-Azerbaijan Friendship Association. Avail of this opportunity I would like to express my deep gratitude to the National Assembly and people of Vietnam for this invaluable assistance in these difficult times in which we all live,” he added.

Azerbaijan is located close to a number of current COVID-19 hotspots such as Iran, Turkey, and Russia. According to global statistics released by the website Wordometer, as of 9:12 am on May 14, Azerbaijan has recorded a total of 2,758 COVID-19 cases, in addition to 35 deaths caused by the disease.

Situated in the South Caucasus region between Asia and Europe, Azerbaijan is home to a population of approximately 10 million people.
