President Tran Dai Quang calls for emulation movement to be fostered

President Tran Dai Quang has called on the parties concerned to step up the emulation movement, considering it as a strong stimulus for Vietnam’s industrialisation, modernisation and international integration.

The call was part of the State leader’s article on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s appeal for patriotic emulation.

President Quang stated that, amid the most difficult days of the resistance war against the French, President Ho Chi Minh’s appeal had encouraged the Vietnamese compatriots and soldiers to unite, to bring into play their full strength and overcome all hardships to make contributions to the revolutionary cause.

He cited the movements to alleviate poverty and illiteracy, and destroy foreign aggressors, as the prime examples of patriotic emulation during the 1945-1954 period, with the emergence of many outstanding heroes such as Phan Dinh Giot, Be Van Dan, Vo Thi Sau, To Vinh Dien, Cu Chinh Lan, La Van Cau, Nguyen Thi Chien, Tran Dai Nghia and Ngo Gia Kham.

President Quang went on to enumerate a series of emulation movements during the 1954-1975 period when Vietnam was building socialism in the north and striving for national liberation and reunification in the south. The patriotic emulation movements motivated people from all walks of life to actively work and fight, helping Vietnam achieve victory over the US bombardment campaigns against the north, as well as the US war strategies in the south, and finally the great victory of 1975 that fully liberated southern Vietnam and reunified the country.

Notable role models during the periods were 10 young female volunteers at the Dong Loc T-Junction, 12 female soldiers at Truong Bon, Trinh To Tam, Le Ma Luong, Nguyen Viet Xuan, Nguyen Van Troi, Bui Ngoc Duong, Vu Xuan Thieu, Dang Thuy Tram, Ho Giao and many other bright examples.

Following the reunification of the country, especially during the more than 30 years of the Doi Moi reform process, the role of patriotic emulation continued to be promoted with substantive content and diverse forms in all areas and at all levels, the State leader noted, adding that patriotic emulation movements have given rise to many exceptional individuals and collectives who have recorded excellent achievements and have been praised as labour and armed forces heroes.

Building on the results brought about by the patriotic emulation movements over the past 70 years, President Tran Dai Quang called for the continued improvement of emulation movements in terms of content and form in order to promote the cause of industrialisation, modernisation and international integration and transform emulation into a nationwide action programme.

In the final part of his article, President Tran Dai Quang cited a teaching by President Ho Chi Minh, which states that praising good examples and good deeds is one of the best ways to strengthen the Party, educate new people and build a new life.
