The country has been strongly advised to redouble efforts to put an end to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in a bid to have the European Commission (EC)’s ‘yellow card’ removed, thereby boosting aquatic exports to the EU market, according to industry insiders.

A festival was held in the central province of Quang Ngai’s Sa Huynh port on February 7 or the third day of the first lunar month to mark the first sailing of local fishermen in the lunar year.

The US’s Global Policy Journal website has said Vietnam may become a model for ASEAN countries in fighting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

There are no longer fishing boats that have committed illegal catching since the beginning of 2018, heard a conference held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) on May 5. 

Despite local authorities of northern coastal province of Quang Ninh ordering tougher management and punishment of destructive fishing practices, use of illegal fishing equipment is still common, Nong Thon Ngay Nay (Countryside Today) newspaper reported.
