The 16th Party Congress of central Thua Thien-Hue province (2020-2025 tenure) opened on October 22, bringing together 350 delegates representing Party members across the locality.

The Congress held a minute’s silence in tribute to officers, soldiers, and residents killed by floods and landslides in Thua Thien-Hue and other central provinces in recent days.

Addressing the Congress, Politburo member and Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Tong Thi Phong, on behalf of the Party, the State, and the legislature, extended her deepest sympathies over the losses caused by the natural disasters in the region.

She lauded Thua Thien-Hue’s prompt rescue efforts, which helped mitigate the losses.

The official highlighted the achievements the locality has posted over the last five years, with annual growth averaging 6.5 percent and the economic structure tilting towards services and industry.

Tourism has become an economic spearhead and the maritime economy has gradually become a development engine of the locality, she continued.

Phong urged Thua Thien-Hue to successfully materialise Resolution No 54 of the Politburo and Resolution No 83 of the Government regarding the building and development of the province by 2030 with a vision to 2045.

The province needs to mobilise all resources to turn itself into a centrally-run city by 2025 and a national and regional centre of culture, tourism, extensive healthcare, education-training, and science-technology.

Local cultural potential should be further optimised, she said, and asked the province to develop agriculture towards high-technology and improve the quality of new-style rural area building and sustainable poverty reduction.

Regarding Party building, she said the task must be carried out synchronously and firmly in terms of politics, ideology, organisation, and personnel.

It was reported at the Congress that annual per capita income in Thua Thien-Hue is expected to stand at 2,169 USD this year, ranking its third in the central coastal region.

Its total social investment in the 2016-2020 period reached some 105.1 trillion VND, with an annual growth rate of 11 percent.

The service sector made up 48 percent of the province’s gross regional domestic product (GRDP). Over the last five years, it has attracted 63 service and tourism projects worth 76.7 trillion VND and 149 industrial projects with total registered capital of around 103 trillion VND.

At the Congress, slated to wrap up on October 22, delegates also raised funds in support of flood victims.
