A Historic Milestone in Vietnam - Canada Relations: Prospects for Elevating the Partnership

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and President To Lam met with leaders of three major US groups – Warburg Pincus, Boeing and Apple – in New York on the afternoon of September 21 (local time).

Vietnam attaches great importance to its relations with the US and wishes to see the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership continue to develop in a stable and long-term manner, in line with the interests and aspirations of the peoples of both countries.

Vietnam and Türkiye should also work towards the goal of 4 billion USD in bilateral trade by having Türkiye recognise Vietnam's market economy status, open their respective markets to each other and reduce trade barriers, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam said.

The Party and State have determined that Vietnam must persistently and resolutely address these shortcomings, while creating favourable conditions and encouraging scientists to conduct research and pursue innovation in order to develop practical and effective products, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam said.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and President To Lam called on USTDA to strengthen coordination with Vietnamese ministries, sectors and businesses to identify a number of strategic, high-impact projects for targeted support, particularly in energy and power grids, digital infrastructure and data centres, aviation, seaports, logistics and modern transport.

General Secretary and President To Lam expressed his belief that combining Vietnam’s strengths, dynamic economy, development ambitions and innovation opportunities with Stanford’s global knowledge, talent and networks will help establish an effective cooperation model between academia and practice, universities and businesses, and technology and people, generating new value and practical benefits for both sides and the region.

On September 20, 1977, Vietnam officially became the 149th member state of the United Nations (UN). Over the past nearly half-century, the Vietnam-UN relationship has undergone a remarkable journey, deeply intertwined with the country's post-war recovery, nation-building, and increasingly extensive international integration.

The Prime Minister requested a serious review to clarify the responsibility of organisations, units, and individuals involved in the inadequate supply of textbooks at the beginning of the school year, with violations to be handled in accordance with regulations.

NA President Tran Thanh Man said in 2027 the Government should shift from pursuing a high volume of legislation to ensuring high-quality laws that provide stability and create favourable conditions for development.

General Secretary and President To Lam’s attendance and address at UNGA 81 high-level debate are particularly significant as Vietnam and the UN look ahead to the 50th anniversary of their relations.

FPA President and CEO Noel V. Lateef emphasised that awarding the FPA Medal to General Secretary and President To Lam serves as a tribute both to the Vietnamese leader personally and to a Vietnam that is undergoing robust transformation and integrating more deeply, proactively, and responsibly into regional and global affairs.

Assessing the significance of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam’s attendance at the UN General Assembly High-Level Week, a UN official noted that Vietnam’s presence consistently reflects a development and foreign policy vision that places peace, stability, security, and the well-being of the people at the centre.

Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Jim Nickel said that Canada regards the visit as an opportunity to further advance bilateral relations, reflecting their substantive nature and enormous potential.

The trip is expected to make an important contribution to further strengthening and deepening Vietnam’s relations with the UN, the US and its partners; promoting more substantive and closely connected Vietnam–Canada ties; and affirming Vietnam’s proactive, active and responsible role in global issues, as well as its active contribution to regional and global peace, stability, cooperation and development.

Addressing the ceremony, General Secretary and President To Lam highlighted the event’s particularly important significance, saying that it marks a new chapter in the history of building and developing the land of Kinh Bac, which boasts a rich tradition of culture, revolutionary history, dynamism and creativity.

General Secretary and President To Lam’s attendance and important speech at UNGA 81 will reaffirm Vietnam's strong support for and commitment to the central role of the UN in multilateral cooperation and the promotion of respect for international law.

The Party Central Committee’s Political Bureau and Secretariat convened a conference in Hanoi on September 18 to announce a series of personnel decisions, which was attended by Politburo Member and Standing Member of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu.

Prof. Nguyen Thi Lien Hang, Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University, said the trip will not only help further deepen the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership but also affirm Vietnam’s growing role and position at multilateral forums.

Addressing the ceremony, General Secretary and President To Lam recalled President Ho Chi Minh’s words at Gieng Temple on September 19, 1954, when spoke with soldiers on their way to take over Hanoi that “The Hung Kings founded the nation; we must together protect it.”
