ASEAN sends aid to typhoon Damrey's victims in Vietnam

PSNews - An aid package of 40 tons of humanitarian goods from ASEAN member countries arrived in Khanh Hoa province’s Cam Ranh International Airport on November 16 for assisting people who were stricken by recent storm Damrey.

The goods weighing some 40 tons and worth USD174,289, which are 600 sets of utensils, 3,000 sets of personal hygiene aids, 1,000 sets of house repair tools, an aluminium-clad ship and a 40 HP engine.

The goods were sent by the Jakarta-based ASEAN Co-ordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management.

The goods were sent by the Jakarta-based ASEAN Co-ordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management, the primary regional co-ordinating agency on disaster management and emergency response.

The action is based on the ASEAN spirit of “One ASEAN, one response”, agreed upon by all members last year. It calls for fast and collective response to disasters in and outside the region.

This is the second time this year ASEAN gives support to natural disaster-affected regions in Vietnam. In early August, the bloc provided aid to those in the country’s northern mountainous localities who were affected by flash floods and landslides.

The goods will soon allocated to hardly-hit areas.

“ASEAN’s prompt assistance contributes to helping Vietnam overcome the consequences of Storm Damrey, which shows the solidarity and mutual support for each other of ASEAN nations,” said Tran Quang Hoai, Head of the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority and a standing member of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

Strong Storm Damrey landed in central and Central Highlands regions of Vietnam on November 4. The storm reportedly killed 91 people and left 23 missing in the central and south-central regions while destroyed thousands of houses and farm land.

The Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control will work with four hardly-hit provinces, Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen, Quảng Ngai and Binh Đinh, to allocate the goods.

Vietnam has also received emergency aid from other countries, including Russia, Japan, China, the United States and New Zealand.
