The Ba Ria –Vung Tau (187) is a Kilo-class 636 submarine built by Russia and staffed to the Navy’s Submarine Brigade 189. It was built from May 28, 2014, launched on September 28, 2015, and began its trial run on December 19, 2016.

The submarine arrived at Cam Ranh military port in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa on January 20, 2017.

Vietnam People’s Navy has so far had 6 Kilo-class submarines, namely Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Khanh Hoa, Da Nang and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

The building and development of the submarine fleet, according to the Vietnam People's Navy, is inevitable for a coastal country. Vietnam’s submarines have been assigned to safeguard Vietnam’s national sea and island sovereignty and continental shelf, contributing to maintaining a peaceful and stable environment in the region, as well as to promoting the country’s socio-economic development.
