Do Muoi – An exemplary, steadfast communist

Devoting his whole life to the revolutionary cause, former Politburo member and former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Do Muoi was a prime example of a steadfast communist.

Comrade Do Muoi, who was born on February 2, 1917, passed away at 23:12 on October 1 at the Military Hospital 108 in Hanoi.

During his life-long revolutionary career, he always fulfilled tasks assigned by the Party, State and people, firmly held the virtues of a communist and dedicated all his efforts to the nation and the people.

At the age of 19, comrade Do Muoi joined the Popular Front movement. He became a member of the Indochinese Communist Party in 1939. In 1941, he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison at Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi by the French colonialists. In March 1945, he escaped from the prison and continued revolutionary activities by taking part in the Party Committee of then Ha Dong province and directly leading the uprising to seize power in Ha Dong.

Comrade Do Muoi held many leading positions in the Party and the administration, including Secretary of the Party Committees in some northern provinces, Chairman of the Administrative and Resistance Committee, Political Commissar of the High Command of the Joint Zone III, Secretary of the regional Party Committee, Chairman of the Resistance Committee, and Political Commissar of the High Command of the Red River’s left bank region during the resistance war against France. Later, he served as head of some ministries, sectors and the Government and became leader of the Party. He was also a National Assembly deputy in the 2nd and from the 4th to the 9th tenures.

Working in many different fields and experiencing ups and downs of the national development process, comrade Do Muoi established himself as a firm and decisive leader who had close relations with the people.

From the late 1970s to the mid-1980s, as Vice President and then President of the Council of Ministers, he, together with many other leaders and officials, proposed to the Party and Government many creative solutions to promote democracy in economic development and gradually reform the country’s economic development model.

While serving as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee from June 1991 to December 1997, he joined hands with the Party Central Committee, the Politburo and the Secretariat in leading the whole Party, people and army to continue the reform policy and the cause of national construction and protection.

In recent years, despite his old age, comrade Do Muoi continued to be updated on the country’s situation and gave opinions to the Party and the State, thereby contributing to national development.
