Promoting gender equality is a shared responsibility of society as a whole, requiring the participation of both men and women through concrete and sustained actions to build a safe, fair, and enabling environment for women and girls, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, has said.

Viet made the remarks on March 31 while addressing the “Women Breaking Barriers” event, jointly organised by RISE, the Spotlight Initiative, the Permanent Missions of Vietnam, Sweden and Uruguay to the UN to mark the conclusion of “Women’s History Month”.

“Breaking barriers” is not only reflected in symbolic, high-profile achievements, but more importantly in ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls in all circumstances, he stressed, affirming that Vietnamese women have always been a core and pioneering force, from safeguarding the nation to advancing its socio-economic development. He also shared Vietnam’s notable achievements in promoting gender equality as well as protecting and supporting victims of gender-based violence.

In her remarks via a pre-recorded message, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed emphasised that despite significant progress, no country has yet achieved full gender equality. Gender-based violence remains one of the greatest barriers, directly affecting the health, education, and development opportunities of women and girls.

Ambassadors and Heads of Delegations from Sweden, Uruguay, and the European Union also shared a range of experiences and initiatives to advance women’s rights, enhance women’s participation in leadership positions, and underscored the importance of sustaining achievements in the face of current challenges.

Through inspiring remarks by speakers - successful and influential women in the fields of science, technology, media, sports, and the arts, the event helped affirm the role, potential, and contributions of women across all sectors. It also reaffirmed the international community’s commitment to eliminating all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, thereby promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls worldwide./.
