Imprints of PVC-MS in building offshore structures

PSNews – Since its establishment decades ago, Petroleum Equipment Assembly and Metal Structure JSC (PVC-MS) has left its imprints in every big project of the country’s oil and gas industry, from the very first oil and gas base in Vung Tau waters to the building of self-lifting rigs.

To start each project of the oil and gas sector, the first task is to work with experts specializing in mechanical engineering, machinery assembly, especially for steel and metal structures because oil and gas projects require very high standards on building and manufacturing techniques and materials with high bearing capacity, high compressive strength, low metal expansion and good resistance to weather and severe environment.

The PVC-MS was established in October 1983 aiming at developing an support services branch for the oil and gas industry, which includes construction and installation of offshore petroleum works. The PVC-MS, with its first name was Steel Structure Enterprise, was initially tasked with applying the Soviet technology in manufacturing and assembling drilling rig bases.

From March 1984, when the Construction Department (now the Marine Construction Enterprise) of Vietsovpetro started its manufacture of the base of the MSP1, the first oil drilling rig in Vietnam, 15 engineers and workers of the Steel Structure Enterprise were assigned to work with the project to study the oil rig manufacturing technology.

Over the past decades, units of PetroVietnam in general and PVC-MS in particular have taken on two tasks: receiving transferred technology and learning how to operate machinery, and innovating and manufacturing industrial products including oil and gas exploration, exploitation and transportation equipment, self-lifting rigs.

They have gradually mastered a lot of specialized mechanical engineering fields.

Over the past 36 years since its establishment, PVC-MS has made memorable milestones and historical achievements associated with the development of the PVC-MS brand, which has contributed to the general development of Vietnam’s oil and gas industry.

The PVC-MS built the base of Vietnam’s first rig, then made the "junction" system linking space of tubular steel structures, laying a foundation for it to manufacture rig bases in Vietnam.

The PVC-MS also constructed DK1 platforms for scientific research and marine services in the waters of the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago. For the first time, it co-operated with Vietsovpetro Joint Venture Enterprise to build oil rig for foreign partners, opening international co-operation between PVC-MS and foreign partners in this field. Since then, the PVC-MS has reached a lot of outstanding achievements.

With achievements and efforts of generations of leaders and workers, the PVC-MS was honored with many noble awards such as the first, second and third class Labour orders awarded by the State President and certificates of merit from the Prime Minister.

The PVC-MS not only acquires and masters the technology of manufacturing and installing oil and gas projects, but also constantly improves techniques and practical applications to reduce costs and improve efficiency. This is to affirm the reputation of an international contractor in the field of oil and gas construction.

Recently, Vietsovpetro and the PVS-MS have become the principal contractors responsible for building both onshore and offshore structures of the Thang Long Wind project - an offshore wind power project worth about US$3 billion located off Ke Ga Cape, Binh Thuan Province.

With its successes in the DK1 rig, the drilling rigs at Su Tu Nau, Su Tu Vang, Thien Ung fields, the PVC-MS is internationally rated as one of the trustworthy contractors in this field.

While the Vietsovpetro is the "Big Brother" in Vietnam’s oil and gas industry with its long tradition and experience in oil, gas exploration and production, the PVC-MS is one of the pioneering and major units in designing and assembling rig bases, oil and gas rigs and metal-structured systems of offshore works.
