Phu Yen fishermen catch rare bluefin tuna in Hoang Sa

PSNews- The owner of Thoai Khoa Private Enterprise in Phu Dong ward, Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen city confirmed that he spent 66 million VND to buy a bluefin tuna from Huynh Van Quy, a local fisherman. This is the most expensive bluefin tuna ever caught by Phu Yen fishermen.

The fishing vessel, belonging to Mr. Huynh Van Quy, left for Hoang Sa waters, the Vietnamese traditional fishing grounds, under Vietnam’s sovereignty, to fish tuna on May 15.

Till May 28, Mr. Huynh Van Quy and his crew had caught 20 bluefin tunas including a rare bluefin tuna, weighing 240kg. The fishermen had to spend 3 hours pulling the fish onto the vessel.

On June 3, Mr. Quy's fishing vessel docked at Dong Tac fishery port with the rare bluefin tuna onboard. The fish was then sold to Thoai Khoa Private Enterprise. The fish weighed 220kg after preliminary treatment.

According to experts, bluefin tuna is found mainly in the Pacific and Indian oceans, they can also live in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. They can live up to 40 years and often dwell at a water depth of more than 1,200m. An average bluefin tuna is about 150kg in weight while the biggest recorded bluefin tuna in the Pacific Ocean weighs 450kg.

In Japan, bluefin tuna is valuable as it is used to make sushi and sashimi. About 80% of the world's fished tuna volume is consumed by the Japanese people.

However, before being imported to the Japanese market, tuna must be preserved and processed under the Japanese-set high standards.
