PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and PM Samdech Techo Hun Sen sign Supplementary Treaty to the 1985 Treaty on the Delimitation of National Boundaries and the Supplementary Treaty 2005.

The common Vietnam-Cambodia land borderline is approximately 1,245 km long, running through 10 Vietnamese provinces and 9 Cambodian localities.

Both nations have been carrying out boundary delimitation and border marker planting work since early 1986 under signed agreements. As of December last year, they finalized around 84 % of the workload.

At the conference, the two PMs inked a Supplementary Treaty to the 1985 Treaty on the Delimitation of National Boundaries and the Supplementary Treaty 2005 between Vietnam and Cambodia.

They also witnessed the signing of a protocol on land border demarcation and marker planting between the two countries.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc highlighted the importance of the two freshly- signed documents as well as already signed border agreements as a legal foundation to promote a borderline of peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development.

“The signing ceremony today is a strong declaration of both countries to the world about their commitment to building a borderline of peace, friendship, cooperation and development on the basis of mutual respect of each other’s territorial integrity and benefits for both peoples’ prosperity and happiness,” said the Vietnamese Government leader.

Phuc applauded the joint efforts to finalize 84% of border delimitation work as of December 2018, describing it as an outstanding achievement of bilateral cooperation to deal with border issues.

For his part, PM Hunsen hailed progress in border issue settlement as a result of the combined efforts and great friendship.

“That is the outcome of the efforts of the Vietnamese Prime Minister and me, along with the Vietnam-Cambodia joint border committee and administrations at all levels of the two countries over the past 14 years, since the signing of the supplementary treaty in 2005,” he said.

The Cambodia PM stated that his nation is taking heed to the construction of infrastructure, roads, markets and production facilities in border areas, thereby benefiting residents of both nations and contributing to stronger cooperation and development among Greater Mekong Sub-region countries and ASEAN member states.

He also called for the greater efforts by the two countries’ authorities and citizens to build a borderline of peace, friendship, cooperation and development.

The two leaders consented to direct relevant units to continue working closely in land border demarcation and marker planting.

PM Phuc suggested the two countries step up closer coordination to come up with an agreement on border and border gate management regulations to replace the agreement signed in 1983.
