He reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to further promoting its role and actively and constructively contributing to the common work of the UN in all three pillars of security - politics, development and human rights.
Vietnam strongly supports multilateralism and a world order based on international law and the UN Charter, he assured the UN leader, adding it supports the UN’s central role in the global governance system, as well as a global, comprehensive approach to be taken to deal with common challenges such as epidemics and climate change.
He also voiced Vietnam’s support for strengthening relations between the UN, parliaments of member states and the Inter-Parliamentary Union to take advantage of legislative support for the UN agenda.
Chinh said that Vietnam is now implementing three strategic breakthroughs aimed at turning the country into an industrial and high-income economy by 2045. To realize the goal, he expected that the UN continue to accompany Vietnam and provide effective support, including its support for implementing the National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030.
He then briefed the UN leader about Vietnam’s COVID-19 control efforts, especially its results in carrying out the vaccination strategy, and requested the UN further support developing countries in responding to the pandemic and ensuring social security while providing policy advice for recovery towards a greener, more sustainable and more self-reliant direction.
The PM reiterated Vietnam’s resolve to implementing its commitments at the recent 26th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP26), and suggested that the UN support the country in establishing a partnership on energy transition with G7 members, as well as in building a climate finance strategy in order to effectively mobilize resources from international development partners.
He also suggested the UN provide continued support for Vietnam in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including goals on gender equality, clean energy, economic growth and decent employment.
Vietnam will actively participate in extensive discussions and consultations at the UN to consider the implementation of recommendations in the United Nations Secretary-General's Report on ‘Our Common Agenda’, so as to promote major international agreements, he said.
The government leader briefed the UN leader on Vietnamese personnel’s engagement in UN peacekeeping missions, and asked the UN to strengthen its support in this field. He also suggested that the UN continue to cooperate with Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of the past war, especially in clearing bombs and mines left over from the war.
For her part, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed affirmed that Vietnam is an important partner and friend of the United Nations, and wished that the two sides would continue to develop the relationship in a more comprehensive and effective manner.
Amina was very impressed with the country’s socio-economic development achievements along with its efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
She highly appreciated the country’s active and responsible contributions to the common work of the UN, especially as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2020-2021, noting the voice of Vietnam is very important for international solidarity in the context of the world going through many crises and differences,
Vietnam always has a strong voice in support of multilateralism, peace and UN reform, responsible engagement in the UN peacekeeping force, and effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), she said.
She went on to say that the country resolves to implement its climate change commitments and promote development cooperation for the common benefit of the community.
The Deputy Secretary-General affirmed that the UN will continue to support Vietnam’s development priorities in a green, sustainable and more resilient direction. She shared Vietnam’s views on many regional and international issues, including the East Sea issue, and wished that the ASEAN-UN partnership would be further consolidated for the sake of peace, security and prosperity in the region and the world at large.
She also expressed hope that Vietnam would strongly promote its role in addressing global problems commensurate with its capacity and position.
At the end of the meeting, PM Pham Minh Chinh respectfully conveyed the invitation to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and other UN leaders to visit Vietnam this year.
