Da Nang announces thousand-year-old artifacts at Phong Le Cham Tower Relics

PSNews - The Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture on August 22 in collaboration with a team of archaeologists from Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HUSSH) held a meeting to announce the initial results of an excavation in the Phong Le Cham Tower Relics in 2018.

Under a project to study ancient Phong Le temple tower of the Cham ethnic minority from June 10 to September 10, a team of archaeologists from the History School of HUSSH in collaboration with the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture held the 3rd excavation in an area of nearly 350 square meters at the Phong Le Cham Tower Relics (Group 3, Hoa Tho Dong Ward, Cam Le District, Da Nang City).

During the third excavation course, archaeologists found many valuable stone artifacts such as bricks, roof tiles and sandstones belonging to the ancient Cham people. The found items also include Cham potteries, ceramics dating back from the Sung Dynasty of China, many animal statues such as an intact sand-stone statue of Sinha lion, elephant sculpture and snake statue made from gray quartz stone. All of these artifacts date back from the 9th, 10th and 12th centuries.

The excavation results of the Phong Le Cham Tower Relics in 2018 have unveiled part of the overall architecture of the Cham temple tower with its identical architectural and sculptural features, and functions of worship. Archaeologists suggested extending the excavation area to the South of the relics for further research.

Mr. Ho Tan Tuan, Director of the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture said that the museum currently has an area for the display of Cham artifacts. The museum will also complete dossiers to propose the recognition of the Phong Le Cham Tower Relics as a city-level heritage for better conservation and promotion of its values.
