Russia suspends nuclear cooperation agreement with US

The Russian government on October 5said it had decided to suspend the Russian-US agreement on cooperation in nuclear- and energy-related R&D work.

According to the directive, an agreement between Russia's Rosatom nuclear corporation and the US Department of Energy on studying the feasibility of converting six Russian scientific reactors to low-enriched uranium fuel has been terminated as part of the suspension.

"Pursuant to Federal Law on International Treaties of the Russian Federation, a decision was adopted to suspend the Agreement," the government said in a directive posted on its website.

The document said actions taken by the United States related to the introduction of sanctions against Russia in connection with the events in Ukraine have directly affected the areas of cooperation under the Agreement.

"The regular extension of US sanctions against Russia, including the suspension of Russian-US nuclear energy cooperation, requires the adoption of countermeasures in relation to the US," the directive said.
