The AFF 2024 initiative was announced by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia in September 2023. It is considered as one of the foremost multilateral diplomatic events hosted by Vietnam this year.

Speaking at an international press conference in Hanoi on April 1, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet affirmed that the AFF 2024 is expected to create a platform for stakeholders within and beyond ASEAN to contribute ideas and initiatives,  adding that the forum is about to forge a shared vision for ASEAN 2045 and its implementation.

The forum also looks to provide new pragmatic policy recommendations to ASEAN leaders, while improving understanding and cooperation among stakeholders, in order to create a sustainable, people-centered future for ASEAN. It will also contribute to the coming UN Summit of the Future in September.

According to Mr. Do Hung Viet, the opening session will see the attendance and speeches by high-ranking Vietnamese leaders, current and incoming ASEAN Chairs, ASEAN Secretary-General, and UN Secretary-General.

Plenary session one, titled "ASEAN’s Rapid Development for a Sustainable Future", will feature discussions on fostering a future for the ASEAN community. The second plenary session will discuss ensuring comprehensive security for a people-centered ASEAN Community.
