ABB teams up Da Nang in its smart city ambitions

Da Nang is taking steps to transform itself into a smart city by 2020 in line with the direction from Vietnam’s government and ABB technologies will support this transformation.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in developing Da Nang into a smart city by 2020 has been signed today between ABB and Da Nang Department of Information and Communications Technology, the executing agency of the Da Nang Smart City Scheme. According to the MoU, ABB will support Da Nang in the areas of clean water and leakage management, waste and wastewater management, data center expansion, and help establish a marine operations center.

In its role as a technology partner, ABB will continue to invest R&D resources in these areas and support Da Nang to develop technological solutions to become more sustainable, competitive and livable. In addition, ABB will help the authorities to approach international experts and connect with other smart city models over the world for sharing of knowledge and expertise.

Da Nang, located in central Vietnam, is 1 of 10 “worth-living cities” surveyed by Live and Invest Overseas (LIO) in 2018 and recently ranked 15th among a list of “52 Places to go in 2019” by The New York Times. In recent years, the city of Da Nang has actively made efforts to modernize its infrastructure and has achieved a number of significant milestones: the leading city in ICT Index for 10 consecutive years, and being 1 of only 2 cities in Southeast Asia to use chatbot technology (Danang FanstatiCity) to promote tourism, the other being Singapore.

“ABB is proud to partner with Da Nang in its journey to make improvements in sustainability, quality of life and economic growth. ABB products and solutions are at the heart of a city's critical infrastructure, relied upon for everything from the supply of power, water and heat, to the automation of the factories and buildings we work in,” said Brian Hull, Country Managing Director, ABB in Vietnam. “We will bring our wealth of experience in global deployment of similar smart city projects to support Da Nang in accomplishing its vision.

The MoU signing ceremony was part of a workshop organized by Da Nang Department of Information and Communications Technology titled “Announcement of Building Smart City in Danang City”. At the event, ABB also delivered a keynote titled “Building a Smart City: Technologies bring a livable environment”.
