Mr Chau said two pig-farming households in the hamlet of An Binh in Lien Hiep commune reported on June 21 that some of their pigs had showed symptoms of the ASF virus. Results from samples taken from the contaminated pig farm tested positive for the ASF virus.

The outbreak had worsened by June 23 with 44 pigs in nine households across the hamlets of An Binh, An Ninh, An Tinh, and An Hiep being reported dead. All infected pigs were culled under current regulations.

As of 3pm on June 24, a total of 82 dead pigs from 13 pig-farming households in Lien Hiep commune, Duc Trong district, had been culled.

The province has set up a total of 24 quarantine checkpoints at major transport routes in order to strictly monitor the transportation of pigs and pork products.

Mr Chau noted that Lien Hiep commune is a major pig-raising area in Duc Trong district with a total of 27,300 pigs. Moreover, Duc Trong district is home to nearly 90,000 pigs, making it the largest pig-raising locality throughout the central highlands province of Lam Dong.

Other localities such as Lam Ha district, Bao Loc city, and Di Linh district have undertaken drastic preventive measures as a means of preventing the further spread of the ASF.
