The test, hosted by the Southeast Asian linguistics exchange and universalisation society in Japan has seven levels. Certificates will be given to those who pass the first six levels.

Chairman of the examination board Yanagisawa Yoshio said it took two years to prepare the test.

Ise Yoji from the Japan College of Foreign Languages said one of the reasons for the organisation of the test is that Vietnam has an important position in Southeast Asia and will be a developed nation in the future.

In addition, more Japanese students are looking to Vietnam as a destination for study, hence the need to learn Vietnamese, he said.

According to Ise, the number of Japanese students in Vietnam will increase strongly in the next three or four years, and next Vietnamese skill tests can attract up to thousands of people.

Pham Quang Hung, First Secretary in charge education affairs at the Embassy of Vietnam in Japan, underlined the growing ties between Vietnam and Japan in all fields, particularly via the investment Japanese enterprises have made in Vietnam.

Demand to learn Vietnamese in Japan is growing, Hung said, adding that this shows the strong people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.

The second edition of the test will be held on June 24, 2018.
