Overseas Vietnamese support National COVID-19 Vaccine Fund

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son on June 17 handed over 6.2 billion VND (270,210 USD) donated by the oversea Vietnamese (OVs), the Office of the Lao National Assembly, and staff at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee in support of the National COVID-19 Vaccine Fund and the fight against the ravaging pandemic.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Son said that although facing various challenges, the overseas Vietnamese community always thinks of and supports their compatriots at home in the fight against COVID-19.

In addition to the aforementioned sum, nearly 30 OV organisations and groups in the US, Canada, France, among others have raised funds to support Vietnamese people in the homeland, especially frontline forces combating the pandemic, the minister said.

For his part, Chairman of the VFF Central Committee Do Van Chien thanked the donors and pledged to allocate the aid to forces and people in need in an open, transparent and effective manner, with a priority given to the purchase of COVID vaccines for all people.

By June 16, OVs had offered about 5.3 billion VND to COVID-19 prevention and control efforts and the vaccine fund.

They also have presented medical supplies to health workers and people in COVID-hit localities.

Earlier, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs under the Foreign Ministry handed over 200 million VND, five tonnes of rice and other necessities donated by Vietnamese national Nguyen Hoai Bac in Canada, Vietnamese national Phan Bich Thien in Hungary and other organizations to Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces, the country’s current largest COVID-19 hotspots.
