Various mountainous communes in Dien Bien, including Nam Po, Tuan Giao or Tua Chua, experienced a record low temperature of under 4 degrees Celsius.
Particularly, frost and thin ice appeared in Sin Chai and Ta Sin Thang, highland communes of Tua Chua district.
Dao Duc Thuy, Director of the Dien Bien Meteorological and Hydrographical Station, said that the severe cold weather occurred in the area of the Pha Din Pass from December 15 to 17 and continued to December 21. As the cold spell continued to intensify, on December 20, many places of Dien Bien province has suffered from a harsh weather condition. Frosts are likely to occur in high mountain areas, leading to disaster risk level 1.
The Dien Bien Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster and Rescue has requested provincial-level agencies, units, local authorities, especially in mountainous areas, to regularly update changes in the weather and inform local people in time to actively prevent and respond to extreme weather conditions, and deploy officers to inspect and guide local people to protect their cattle.
The cold weather also affected various areas in Cao Bang, causing health troubles to many people and killing a number of cattle.
Frosts and ice were seen on tops of the mountains in Thanh Cong commune of Nguyen Binh, one of the coldest areas in Cao Bang.
In other areas, the temperature could drop to 2-3 degrees Celsius, causing troubles to the local people’s daily life and production.
In response to the unfavorable weather conditions, the health sector of Cao Bang had prepared necessary medical supplies and advise people to have measures to protect themselves from the cold spell.
