Vietnam bags eight gold medals at International Mathematics and Science Olympiad

PSNews – All 23 Vietnamese students taking part in the 15th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) earned medals, the Hanoi Municipal Department of Education and Training announced on October 3.

The organizing board of IMSO 2018 announced the final results of the competition on October 3, in Hangzhou (China). Accordingly, all 23 Vietnamese students brought home medals, including eight gold, 10 silver and five bronze medals.

This was the 4th time Vietnam joined the event, and it was touted as the highest achievement the country has ever made in this international competition.

The four gold medals in mathematics this year belonged to Nguyen Dinh Kien from Hong Bang Secondary School, Hai Phong city, Tran Bao Duy from Hanoi’s Ngo Sao Secondary School, and two students from Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted - Ngo Chi Kien and Trinh Anh Minh. Nguyen Dinh Kien was also awarded with Best Theory prize in maths.

The four gold medals in science went to Nguyen Nhat Minh and Phan Vu Nguyen Khai, both from the Hanoi’s Ngoi Sao Secondary School; Dinh Pham Nguyen Hang from Hanoi-Amsterdam school, and Nghiem Xuan Son from Nguyen Truong To Secondary School.

Earlier, all 69 Vietnamese competitors in the past three years won medal of IMSO. 

This year’s event was hosted by China and from September 28 – October 4. The event attracted 400 students, arranged into 25 teams from 22 countries and territories. Vietnam is slated to host IMSO next year.

IMSO is an annual competition in Math and Science for primary school students aged under 13, aiming to increase their interest in mathematics and sciences and to develop problem-solving skills.
