500-year-old pottery village in Hoi An recognised as national heritage

PSNews – Authorities of Hoi An city on September 30 has announced that, the Thanh Ha pottery village in the central province of Quang Nam’s Hoi An city has been recognised as National Intangible Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.


Thanh Ha pottery village is located on the banks of the Thu Bon River, 3km west of Hoi An. It was established at the end of the 15th century and flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Experiencing ups and downs of time and history, Thanh Ha pottery village seemed to be forgotten. However, with the enthusiasm of the village elders and seniors, Thanh Ha is gradually recovered in the development of economy, culture and tourism of Hoi An ancient town.

Over the past five centuries, Thanh Ha pottery village still retains the traditional method of making pottery - handmade and wheel thrown.

The locality is now home to around 30 production households with 73 employees, including five outstanding artisans and two skilled workers. The products are divided into two types: brown earthenware (which is baked with a high fire from 800 to more than 1000 degrees Celsius) and red pottery (which is baked with a low temperature below 300 degrees Celsius).

Nowadays, Thanh Ha’s products mainly serve local people and tourists with small and sophisticated products. In addition, some products are also manufactured to serve the construction of architecture and the hotel, restaurant...

Since 2001, the village has become a tourist attraction of Hoi An. Last year, more than 600,000 people visited the village.

With these unique values, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thien, the Minister of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, has recently signed a certificate in which “Thanh Ha Pottery - Thanh Ha Ward – Hoi An City – Quang Nam Province” is included in the List of national intangible cultural heritage.
