70% “black spots” in Hanoi removed by the end of 2016

PSNews –The number of “black spots” of traffic congestion on roads in Hanoi have been reduced to 41 in 2016 while 20 out of 44 traffic congestion spots left from 2015 have been completely resolved.

The Hanoi Municipal People Committee on December 26 held a conference to summarize 8 years implementing Resolution 16/NQ-CP by the Government on overcoming traffic jams.

According to reports of the Hanoi Department of Transportation, Hanoi has decreased nearly 70% “black spots” of traffic congestion on roads in the past 8 years. Hanoi now faces only 41 congestion spots in comparison with 124 spots in 2010 while 20 out of 44 spots left from 2015 have been completely resolved.

However, due to a number of the city’s key traffic projects, such as the Nhon – Ga Ha Noi and the Cat Linh – Ha Dong Urban Railway, which are now under construction and the surge of private vehicles, 17 new congestion spots have occurred in 2016.

To achieve the positive results, Hanoi has made major efforts to overcome difficulties, investing in transport infrastructural projects; building public transportation networks and planning and developing transport systems of roads, railways and waterways.

Hanoi now has 97 bus routes, including 73 subsidized routes, 9 routes in the city’s peripheries and 4 pilot routes with more than 1,500 vehicles in operation and the total length of the bus route network of 1,700 km.

In 2008, the bus transportation capacity represented only 7% of the total passenger transportation but it reached 20% in 2016.

Hanoi will put the first bus rapid transit route into operation on January 1, 2017.

The city is speeding up the construction of the Urban Railways projects, which are expected to be operational by 2020.
