"Con Dao island in the past and at present" exhibition opens in Vinh Long

PSNews - The Vinh Long authorities in collaboration with the Con Dao Museum opened an exhibition themed "Con Dao island in the past and at present" on June 11, in a war memorial area in Long Phuc commune, Long Ho district, Vinh Long.

The event is in celebration of the 106th anniversary of birth of Pham Hung, late Chairman of the Council of Ministers (June 11th, 1912). The opening section drew the participation of leaders of Vinh Long, over 500 local school students, people in and outside Vinh Long province.

Before the opening ceremony, delegates had visited at the commemorative house of offered flowers and incense to late Chairman of the Council of Ministers Pham Hung, an excellent student of President Ho Chi Minh and an outstanding revolutionary cadre of Vietnam.

According to the organizing board, the exhibition focuses on three main topics, including: Con Dao prison and the struggle of political prisoners (1862 - 1975), the construction and development of Con Dao Island (1975 - 2016), and the Con Dao vision to 2030.

The "Con Dao island in the past and at present" exhibition features more than 300 photos and documents honouring exemplary revolutionaries in the colonialists and imperialists’ prison. Especially, the exhibition showcases valuable artifacts of late Chairman of the Council of Ministers Pham Hung.

Currently, Con Dao, previously known as “Hell On Earth”, has become a popular tourist destination in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, due to its natural beauty.

Con Dao was the most horrible hell in the world when people shudder to mention it. From the mid-19th century to 1975, Con Dao was transformed into a giant prison, detaining hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese patriots.

Here, more than 22,000 elite children of the country have fallen for the independence and freedom of the country. The tuberculosis, tiger cage, cow shed, rice grinding, bridge 914, Hang Duong cemetery … forever there, showing the spirit of brave, strong will of the people of Vietnam.
