Da Nang joins finalists for WWF's One Planet City Challenge 2018

PSNews - The Da Nang Municipal People's Committee announced on July 12 that Da Nang has won the National Green City for the 2017 - 2018 period. With this title,  the Vietnam's central coastal city of Da Nang will compete with 21 other cities around the world in the final round of the International Green City contest for the prize "Global Green City". 

Da Nang successfully persuaded the jury with its comprehensive solutions and approach to the mitigation of and adaption to climate change, as well as its contributions to deliver the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.

Accordingly, Da Nang is committed to cutting its carbon emissions by 25% by 2030 as compared to its 2016 emissions. The city authorities have implemented a number of initiatives focusing on developing clean energy (solar and wind energy) and green transport (biofuel), and enhancing its wastewater treatment system.

Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Vice Chairman of Da Nang Municipal People’s Committee said: "The city authorities and local people are happy as their efforts were recognized by the international community. Although there is a long and challenging way ahead, Da Nang has pledged drastic action for a green, sustainable and prosperous life for its dwellers, contributing to the global commitment to climate change adaption". 

Organized by the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF), the contest calls on cities worldwide to take actions to create an environment-friendly globe able to minimize and adapt to climate change. 

Each participating city had to submit a report on specific commitments and programs to reduce carbon emissions during its development, particularly in environment, transportation, housing, energy, food, and water resources. This year 132 cities in 23 countries took part in the contest, including Da Nang, Hoi An, and Dong Ha. 

Da Nang is famous for its beautiful destinations, especially clean and white sand beaches. Visitors can admire the natural wonders in Ba Na Hills, explore the jungle in Son Tra Peninsula, and pray at Linh Ung Pagoda with Vietnam’s highest Bodhisattva Statue at 67 metres.

Da Nang will strive to become an international entertainment centre and attractive destination by 2050, when it is expected to welcome around 10 million tourists annually.  The city is also making every effort to reach its target of becoming an environmentally friendly city with sustainable development.
