Formosa Ha Tinh to complete technological upgrading by June 2019

PSNews – The technology transformation process from coke wet quenching (CWQ) to coke dry quenching (CDQ) will be completed by Formosa Ha Tinh by June 2019.

According to Mr. Hoang Van Thuc, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam General Department of Environment (the Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment – MONRE), Formosa Ha Tinh will completed CDQ system 1 by March 31st 2019 and CDQ system 2 by June 30th 2019. In the meantime, Formosa Ha Tinh has also built additional facilities to recycle wastewater for reuse.

Since July 2016, wastewater of Formosa Ha Tinh has been strictly controlled before being discharged into the sea. MONRE in collaboration with the Institute of Environment Technology regularly examine Formosa Ha Tinh’s discharge samples 3 times/day and the results meet the standards.

“The Vietnam General Department of Environment is completing a general report on Formosa Ha Tinh and Minister of MONRE Tran Hong Ha will hold a National Committee meeting to assess Formosa Ha Tinh’s efforts to handle last year’s environmental incident before submitting official proposals to the Prime Minister for further consideration and approval. The Prime Minister will make the final decision on trial operation of blast furnace No.1,” said Mr. Thuc.

Formosa Ha Tinh’s technological transformation from CWQ to CDQ is in line with their investment commitment in Vietnam. Earlier, Formosa Ha Tinh had self-decided to convert CDQ technology to CWQ technology without reporting it to local authorities. According to Minister Tran Hong Ha, among 53 of the company’s offenses, its technology change is the most serious one, although it did not directly cause environmental incidents.

CDQ is considered to be an environmental-friendly technology while CWQ generates a lot of wastes, especially exhaust gases.
