Delivering the opening speech, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hiep, Director of the Vietnam's Institute of Linguistics affirmed that, the conference creates opportunity for Vietnamese and international linguists to discuss about modern linguistics trends as well as to present and evaluate the results of language research in Vietnam over the past years. In particular, they will identify important research tasks for the upcoming time.
At the conference, there have been three keynote speeches that highlighted hot issues including Theoretical basis for compiling a new Vietnamese syntax book; A brief report on Proto-Austroasiatic and Proto-Vietic vocabulary in Vietnamese, On the construction of the elementary Vietnamese core vocabulary for foreign learners
Additionally, 190 reports were presented on five topics including theoretical linguistics; language-culture; interdisciplinary and social linguistics; languages of ethnic minorities, dialects and history of the Vietnamese language; and applied linguistics. Language – culture was discussed in depth with 32 reports conducted by 37 author, one of them is a Thai researcher.
The Institute of Linguistics has affirmed its important role in studying the Vietnamese language by conducting research, linking linguistic organizations and pieces of research, publishing results of Vietnamese and foreign linguistic studies, and promoting personnel training.
