HCM City’s COVID-19 tally in new wave passes 100,000 as 3,578 cases recorded

Vietnam recorded an additional 3,578 new local COVID-19 cases on August 3 morning , including 1,998 in Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s biggest coronavirus epicenter, bringing the southern city's tally in the new pandemic wave to 100,557.

August 3 also saw the country report 15 imported infections, pushing up the overall number of imported cases to 2,287.

Of the morning's tally, HCM City’s count was followed by the provinces of Binh Duong with 519, Long An with 246, Tay Ninh with 176, and Dong Nai with 147.

Vinh Long and Binh Thuan topped the list in two-digit infections at 72 each, trailed by Da Nang (66), Ben Tre (62), Soc Trang (33), Can Tho (31), Dong Thap (31), An Giang (26), Phu Yen (20), Binh Dinh (18), and Dak Lak (11).

The remaining localities registering one single-digit cases included Dak Nong Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Kien Giang , Bac Lieu, Phu Tho, Son La , Hai Duong , Dien Bien, Quang Tri , Thanh Hoa , and  Hanoi

Among the new cases, 687 were detected in the community, and the remainders in isolation facilities or areas currently under lockdown.

Vietnam has so far recorded a total of 165,339, including 163,052 domestic infections in the ongoing pandemic wave that hit the nation more than three months ago.

The infection tally hit more than 7,450 on August 2, with Ho Chi Minh City and  the southern province of Binh Duong recording the highest number of domestic infections at 4,264 and 949.

Also on August 3 morning, the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control also announced the confirmation of an additional 186 deaths relating to COVID-19 in 10 provinces and cities from July 31 to August 2, with HCM City taking the most at 165.

One day earlier, the country received 1,188,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine under the COVAX Facility– the global vaccine access mechanism, according to the UNICEF.

Covax has so far provided Vietnam with more than 8.6 million COVID-19 vaccine doses by AstraZeneca and Moderna.

The Health Ministry is stepping up efforts to seek vaccine sources, with around 110 million doses set to be delivered to Vietnam this year.

Nearly 7 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered throughout the nation so far, including 538,488 being inoculated on August 2 alone.
