More than 94,000 Vietnamese die from cancer every year

PSNews – Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Director of the K Hospital (specializing in treating cancers) spoke at a ceremony in response to the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day that Vietnam has rapidly increased new cases of cancers from 68,000 cases in 2000 to 126,000 cases in 2010. It is predicted to surpass 189,000 cases by 2020.

Thus, hospice and palliative care activities hold a special meaning in reducing the number of cancer cases by early disease detection, comprehensive assessment and treatment.

“Hospice and palliative care plays an important role in cancer treatment, especially in Vietnam, where almost all cancer patients go to doctor only at the final stage of the disease. The K Hospital has established the Department of Pain Management since 2000, which has made a great contribution to palliative care”, said Ass. Pro. Dr. Tran Van Thuan.

Palliative care aims to not only prolong the life of a cancer patient, but also contribute to improving the quality of life for the patient.

In the K Hospital, palliative care is applied when the patient is first diagnosed with a cancer.

In the upcoming time, the hospital will set up a palliative care center to expand the scope and effectiveness of palliative care. The center will also train lower-level hospitals and deploy the palliative care model at home and in the community to meet the patient’s need and desire.
