The cannon, 1.9meter in length, was found by construction workers discovered on July 16 when they were digging a drench to install the sewer as part of the Tam Bac River Renovation Project (Phase 2) in Hai Phong city.
Being notified of the news, relevant agencies rushed to the scene and believed it was a cannon. They later handed it over to the Hai Phong Museum for preservation.
Bui Thi Nguyet Nga, director of the Hai Phong Museum, said preliminary examination showed the cannon dated back to the 19th century under the reign of King Tu Duc. The gun was believed to be related to the construction and protection of Ninh Hai wharf in Hai Phong.
“This cannon, through preliminary examination, is similar to some of the Nguyen Dynasty cannons currently on display at the museum. We will continue to study more about this gun," said Nga.
