Promoting diplomatic training in the digital age among ASEAN+3 countries

PSNews –The Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently held the opening ceremony of the 14th Annual Meeting of Deans and Directors of Diplomatic Training Institutions of ASEAN+3 themed “Enhancing cooperation on diplomatic training among ASEAN+3 countries: Toward a practical mechanism.”

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Van Thao, Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that, in the current rapidly changing world, diplomacy needs to transform, and diplomatic training needs to adapt to emerging challenges. He highly appreciated international and regional cooperation in diplomatic training.

On behalf of the organizers, Dr. Pham Lan Dung, Vice President of the DAV, said that the annual Meeting of Deans and Directors of Diplomatic Training Institutions of ASEAN+3 has become an annual meaningful and highly appreciated forum, involving discussions and dialogues, aiming at improving the quality of diplomatic training of countries in the region.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Nguyen Nguyet Nga, Vice President of the post-2020 APEC vision group, said that the world is changing rapidly in the digital age, therefore, diplomacy in general and diplomatic training in particular have to make an appropriate changes to serve the common development goal.

The diplomat also pointed out how diplomacy, as a tool of foreign policy, has transformed in the digital age. Such transformations require diplomats to adapt and apply flexibly traditional diplomacy and “digital diplomacy.”

The conference took place on October 23-24 in Hanoi with 5 discussion sessions, namely building a common database of diplomatic training programs and materials; building diplomatic training courses and joint internship programs; technology application in diplomatic training; cooperative training mechanism for lecturers; and building an effective and substantive cooperation mechanism in the region.
