16 involved in big online gambling case prosecuted

The Criminal Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on April 7 prosecuted 16 persons for participation in illegal online gambling or organization of illegal online gambling. The total money used for illegal betting mounted to 400 billion VND.

The illegal online gambling ring was run by Vu Manh Cuong, 35, who has a record of murder conviction, and Tran Huy Hung, 25. Other defendants also have different criminal records.

The Criminal Police Department launched investigation into the gambling case on March 25. Accordingly, it coordinated with the Mobile Police Command, the provincial police of Nam Dinh and relevant units raided the gambling ring.

According to the case record, Hung, Cuong, and Dang Thi Nga contacted an unidentified person to get betting accounts at an international football betting website.

The three defendants shared their accounts and betted on international football matches.

The amount of money transacted via their betting accounts totaled over 400 billion VND.

The police also searched and seized 3 automobiles, 920 million VND in cash, 4 laptops, 17 cellphones and other exhibits related to the case. Particularly, the police detected and seized some weapons, including 9 knives and swords, 10 boxes of bullets and sport guns.
