The meeting was the second working session according to the cooperation plan named “Treatment and care for Vietnamese patients suffering from dementia” signed by the two sides, said Dr. Tran Thi Thu Huong, Head of the Memory and Dementia Unit of the 30-4 Hospital.
Since the cooperation plan was launched in 2018, the unit has admitted and treated some 1,450 patients.
Vietnam is one of the 10 countries with the fast aging population growth rates in the world, said Huong.
Surveys show that over 5% of the 60 in Vietnam suffer from dementia. Some 5,000 people have been diagnosed with this disease in Vietnam, but the actual number is likely to be higher.
The diagnose and treatment of people with dementia have not yet received much attention from both the health sector and the public.
It is necessary for the families with dementia patients with dementia to learn about the disease in order to support and hospitalize the patients as early as possible, said Dr. Huong.
