The Fire Police University held a ministerial-level symposium themed “Rescue in disasters and response to climate change” on July 1 in Hanoi.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Tran Quoc To Dr., Assoc. Prof. chaired the symposium. The event was attended by Rector of the Fire Police University Major General Le Quang Bon Dr., Assoc. Prof. as well as scientists inside and outside the Public Security Forces.

Speaking at the event, Major General Le Quang Bon said that the Public Security Forces in general and the fire and rescue police in particular have played a key role in searching and rescuing victims on disasters and responding to climate change.

The symposium aimed at raising the public awareness of the importance of search and rescue missions in disasters, giving comprehensive assessment of disasters in recent years, providing scientific proofs of climate change and the connection between disasters and climate change as well as clarifying the role of the Public Security Forces, including the fire and rescue force, in search and rescue missions in disasters.

The organizing panel had received 61 reports from scientists and managers inside and outside the Public Security Forces before the symposium.

During the event, delegates analyzed factors of disasters, discussed work of forecasting disasters, and assessed the impacts of disasters and climate change on the country.

Delegates also proposed plans to organize professional rescue forces and reserve forces for various-level search and rescue missions, as well as suggested enhancing applying scientific advances and modern technologies in forecasting disasters, producing means and equipment for search and rescue.

Meanwhile, managers and fire police officers shared practical experience in searching and rescuing victims of disasters.

Addressing the event, Deputy Minister Tran Quoc To stressed that the Public Security Forces should effectively implement Party and State’s policies, resolutions of the Public Security Central Party Committee and instructions of MPS leaders on preventing and responding to disasters as well as climate change while advising higher-level authorities to complete laws on search and rescue, disaster relief and response to climate change.

All provincial-level police departments should advise local leadership to draft plans to respond to disasters and climate change, frequently organize search and rescue drills for various possible disaster scenarios, seriously learn lessons from previous search and rescue missions, regularly hold training courses on search and rescue for both professional and non-professional forces.
