Accordingly, within the campaign, the Can Tho Traffic Police will take synchronously measures to handle traffic violations which are causes of traffic accidents.

The force expects the application of comprehensive, drastic measures will help reduce traffic accidents from 5% -10% on all three criteria: the number of accident cases, the number of deaths and the number of injuries.

Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Hiep in charge of the Traffic Police Division under the Can Tho Municipal Police Department said the unit will innovate contents and forms of traffic law education to raise people’s awareness of traffic safety, while coordinating with related agencies to fix irrationalities in the current traffic system and install more traffic signs to facilitate people’s travelling.

Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Hiep emphasized that the unit will also strictly punish violations of traffic regulations on the city’s roads. 2018 witnessed a rise in traffic accidents in Can Tho city, as well as numbers of deaths and injuries.

The most common causes of accidents were driving on wrong-way and wrong lane, and drunk driving. Besides, the poor traffic infrastructure in the city, which still do not meet the demand of economic development and travel of the people, is also considered as a main cause leading to traffic accidents in recent times.
