Con Co – crime-free district of Quang Tri

For years, hundreds of households on Con Co island have enjoyed a peaceful life as no criminal cases occurred on this island.

Con Co is an island district of Quang Tri. It used to be part of Vinh Linh district, a heroic land of Quang Tri in the struggle for national liberation and independence.

Situated in the south of the Gulf of Tonkin, Con Co island has an important position in terms of security and defense, and many advantages for development of economy, tourism and services. But, it also faces potential threats to political stability and social order and safety.

Since its transformation from a military-run island to a civilian-run district 15 years ago, there has been no major criminal cases on the island.

To achieve such results, the local police have developed a strong network of collaborators and have been closely attached to the people, supporting them in their lives and work.

24 policemen on the island have mobilized the local people to participate in the movement of national security protection, disseminated the policies and laws to every local, and encouraged them to report any signs of crime to the authority.

Colonel Tran Van Huy, Head of the Con Co District Police Station, has served in the Public Security Forces for 35 years.

He emphasized that the district’s policemen are all aware that the growth in tourism in recent years may trigger both opportunities and challenges. Hostile forces can mingle with tourist groups to sabotage national security and social order and safety.

In the reality, no major criminal case has occurred on the island but there have still been brawls, fights and minor thefts, mainly caused by tourists, workers and fishermen from other localities. All of the cases have then been handled quickly by the local police.

The local policemen also give good advice to the local authority on issues related to national security, public order and safety; as a result, the whole political system on the island is always unanimous in building and consolidating the whole people defense posture in couple with the whole people security posture throughout the island district.
