Accordingly, the Cu Chi tunnel system was certified as a special national monument by the Prime Minister in December 2015. The Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City was assigned to work on the dossier to submit to UNESCO for recognition of the Cu Chi Tunnels as a World Heritage Site.
By the end of 2022, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City sent an official dispatch to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which then handed a scientific research profile to the Ministry of National Defense, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, the Council of Cultural Heritage for comments.
As part of the next phase, Ho Chi Minh City will co-ordinate with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to propose the Prime Minister to work with the National Committee of UNESCO so as to apply the Cu Chi Tunnels for the list of world heritage nominees at the UNESCO World Heritage Center.
Cu Chi Tunnels is a network of underground defense tunnels built by locals and resistance forces from 1946 to 1968 in Cu Chi district.
The tunnels played an important role in major battles, including the Tet Offensive of 1968 and the Great Spring Victory of 1975. over US imperialists.
