Deputy Minister of Public Security Major General Dang Hong Duc hosted a meeting with the United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General and the Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology Amandeep Singh Gill, on the afternoon of January 5th, in Hanoi.

UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis also attended the meeting.

Welcoming Mr. Amandeep Singh Gill to the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), Deputy Minister Dang Hong Duc underlined that Vietnam highly values the UN’s efforts in supporting countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Deputy Minister Dang Hong Duc underscored that over the past time, Vietnam’s MPS always closely cooperated with UN agencies in enhancing capacities to combat transnational crime, maintain peace, promote gender equality and women's empowerment as well as prison management and counter-terrorism.

In addition, MPS also closely collaborated with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to carry out various capacity-building programs and exchange hands-on experiences in combating high-tech crime.

The Vietnamese Deputy Minister highlighted that Vietnam recently participated actively in crafting numerous UN documents in the field of technology, such as the first UN General Assembly resolution on AI adopted in March 2024 and the Global Digital Compact adopted at the UN Summit of the Future in September 2024.

He also underlined that Hanoi has been selected to host the signing ceremony of the UN Cybercrime Convention in 2025.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Dang Hong Duc suggested that the UN continue to promote the shaping of technology standards, enhance cooperation trends, and reduce competition among stakeholders, while promoting the role of international forums to encourage major countries to share experiences and help developing countries quickly access modern scientific and technological achievements on the way toward their technological self-reliance.

The host voiced that Vietnam hopes that the UN would provide consultancy and support for the country to complete a national policy framework for digital transformation as well as set standards and legal regulations related to AI.

Additionally, Vietnam also seeks assistance in technology transfer and experiences shared by the countries successful in building digital government and digital economy.

In the context of increasing cyber security threats, Deputy Minister Dang Hong Duc stressed that Vietnam wishes to learn experiences from other countries and international organizations in building a national cyber security strategy aligning with international standards.

He also proposed that the UN support Vietnam to organize in-depth training courses on response to cyber issues, malware analysis and protection of critical information infrastructure.

Sincerely thanking Deputy Minister Dang Hong Duc for the meeting, UN Under-Secretary-General and the Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology Amandeep Singh Gill acknowledged and hailed the efforts of Vietnam in promoting scientific and technological innovations and digital transformation as well as Vietnam's active role in international agreements, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Mr. Amandeep Singh Gill underlined that the UN is committed to supporting Vietnam in building a digital transformation policy framework, establishing technology administration standards, and enhancing capacities to combat cybercrime.

He also expressed his belief that the relationship between the UN and Vietnam will positively develop for the common interests of the international community.
